Warning These tools are added for convenience only. While every effort is made to ensure proper functionality, no guarantees can be made. The permissions on the folders do not always work as expected (mostly on the DropBox) and servers can fail. It is best to always have a backup plan for distributing and collecting files. Some possibilities are:
DropBox The DropBox folder can be used to collect files from students in your class. Students have write permissions to the folder, but they can not enter into the folder, list its contents or read other students' files. This is ideal for collecting homework assignments or tests. Each file is stamped with the exact date and time that the file was deposited leaving no doubt when a student turned it in. This can be accessed by right-clicking on the file and choosing properties. Note that the students can not turn in files with the same name - each must be unique. It is highly recommended to have each student name their files with their own names in it or some other variation. Students can access the DropBox by going to the Y: drive, then browsing to the appropriate course. Students are not able to open the folder. They must drag the file(s) on to the folder or if they have the files copied to the clipboard, they can right click on the folder and choose paste. Faculty can access the DropBox as well as other class related folders by going to the Y: drive if logged into a lab computer, otherwise by going to \\Stucluster.students.kutztown.edu\Classes. SendBox The SendBox Folder can be used to distribute files to the students in your class. To use it, simply copy the files and/or folders you wish to distribute into the SendBox folder and then double click the SendNow.vbs file. A folder will be created in each student's home folder with the name of the class and the files will be copied into that folder. The students can access the files on their home folder by going to the U: drive. For example, if you are teaching Basket Weaving 101 section 30 (BSK101030) and you distribute a file called NewWeaves.doc, the students will see it at U:\BSK101030\NewWeaves.doc. Please note that when you distribute files to the students, each student will get his/her own copy of that file. Each student also becomes the owner of the file and therefore the disk space allocation counts toward the student's disk quota. To minimize any inconvenience to the students, please do not distribute large files to the students. Warning: If you send files with the same name as a previously sent file, the previous file will be overwritten. StudentList This folder contains shortcuts to the home folders for all of the students in the class. Double-clicking on one of the links will take you to the home folder for that particular student. This is mostly used to copy files to or collect files from individual students. This is to be used by faculty only. Administration This list gets updated either nightly or weekly at different times throughout the year. This update happens overnight and takes about an hour to update all courses. If you are using this overnight, you may see the student list disappear for a time before it is re-created. Questions If you have any problems or questions with this, please contact Rick Miller in the ITS Division. |
